If you’re a UK design student and colour and design is your thing, if it’s your passion and you were all set to show off your work at New Designers this year, then you’ll want to enter the COLOUR IN DESIGN Awards or if you know someone who is a design student let them know about these awards.

Now in its 3rd year these prestigious awards are the passion project of Marianne Shillingford, Creative Director Dulux UK who is a true champion for up and coming design talent.

Marianne created the Colour in Design Awards to recognise and reward outstanding and innovative use of colour in design by new designers at the beginning of their creative careers.

I’ve known Marianne for over 10 years having teamed up together on podcasts, panel discussions and invited as an industry expert on several Dulux Colour of the Year events. And I was honoured to have Marianne attend my Little Book of Colour book launch party last August where we did a conversation with style interview which was great fun.

Judging for Design Excellence

So I was thrilled when she asked me to be one of the judges for this year’s awards. I can’t wait to see the amazing entries who I’m sure will show innovative use of colour in their design.

This is what I’m really excited to see – colour not used as an afterthought or something merely decorative. But how colour can be used in innovative ways that improve the experience of the consumer or the user. So using colour consciously, with purpose. This is that extra special ‘ingredient’ I’ll be looking out for when I’m reviewing each entry.

Want to enter the Colour in Design Awards?

The designers who have won so far have been people to watch and they’re doing amazing things in the industry. So if you feel like that’s you. If you would like to put one of your designs up for these awards then get your entry in.

The awards are open to all new designers working in creative design disciplines. If you would like to know the criteria you can check it out here.

Then all you need to do is get your submission to the New Designers Awards Programme via your course tutor who will help you. You have until 14th August 2020.

If you would like to keep track of the exciting nominations and the fantastic new design work going on out there, you can follow the developments over on Instagram and see the nominations as they come in. You can follow hashtag #colourindesignaward and account @colourindesignaward.

I’ll be back when the winner is announced to share insights and of course announce the winners!

Wishing everyone who enters the best of luck!
