The symbolic colours of africa.

The symbolic colours of Africa.

Over Christmas I had the opportunity to travel to The Gambia, West Africa, leaving the snow behind to bathe in the beautiful sunshine.

I was given a gift of a bracelet by a local Gambian who told me the colours represented Africa.  Naturally I was curious as to what each colour symbolised.  Here is what I was told.

Colour Symbolism
Yellow represents the sun.
Green represents nature.
Black represents the colour of their skin.
Red represents their blood and how we all have the same colour running through our veins.

Such a poignant point.

Generally speaking, the colour symbolism could be correct, but within the various African countries, they could have different or more meanings. I am from Nigeria, and the first thought I could relate the necklace to something from Ghana.

Yes, you are absolutely right. As this is colour symbolism it could be different from country to country. It would be interesting to find out the meaning from other African countries.
