Red has come to symbolise ‘I love you’ and this is nowhere more evident than on Valentine’s Day. Traditionally, it is the man who will give a gift for the one they love, admire… desire.  Given red is the colour of masculine energy, it’s no surprise red is the most popular choice of colour.

Red is the colour which affects us physically. Red sends the pulse racing. It creates excitement and energy. When it comes to love, red communicates feelings of passion, lust… desire.

In Western societies, the colour red has become so synonymous with Valentine’s Day it has taken on a symbolic, cultural meaning.

If you  were looking to express your love other than using red you could always try Apricot/Peachy tones or pink, both communicating a different kind of love.

Neill Strain from Neill Strain Floral Couture, Belgravia  is noticing a break with tradition. His clientele are requesting ‘hot’ pinks to be mixed in with their reds. Other popular colour choices are purples and oranges.  He’s also seen a rise in women buying Valentine’s Day flowers, particularly his international clients.

Kent based floral designer Sacha Selcuk finds that 95% of men ask for red flowers for their Valentines.

If you want to bring fun and playfulness to your Valentines then orange is the perfect colour. Giving purple flowers expresses your openness to being your true, authentic self.
